The UNP raised its serious concerns regarding the three bags of marked ballot papers found at a counting centre in Puttalam while raising doubts and questions about the outcome of the elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo today (September 26) UNP MP Harin Fernando stated that serious doubts have arisen over the tampering of the Provincial Council elections after UPFA candidate and former UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera spoke about “computer jilmart”.

He said that he could not accept the comments made by the Elections Commissioner on this incident stating that he did not take the situation seriously and had dismissed as a mere careless mistake. MP Fernando added that if this country trusted in authorities that were so inefficient, it was in real trouble.

He also admitted that his own party had several shortcomings and that this was not an attempt to find an excuse for the UNP’s loss at the elections. The MP even wished Dayasiri Jayasekera the best of luck and thanked all those who kept their spine straight and contested in the elections.

The UNP parliamentarian expressed his happiness that Jayasekera was able to withstand various undermining efforts by Johnston Fernando to win the election.
