Principal of John Kotelawala school transferred following shaming accusations

The Principal of the John
Kotelawala school in Kurunegala, who was accused of shaming a student which
lead to her suicide, has been transferred with immediate effect to the Zonal
Education Office.
Saman Indrarathana, the
Principal of the Kurunegala school, was accused of shaming one of the school’s students over a facebook photograph, which lead to the girl committing
suicide. Indrarathana was later arrested over the incident and subsequently
released on bail.
The decision to transfer
the Principal was taken by the Provincial Education Ministry following an
investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, at a press
conference held today (February 21) to discuss the incident, North Western Province
Chief Ministry Secretary P.B.M. Sirisena stated that a three-person committee
headed by the Senior Assistant Secretary is conducting a separate investigation
into the incident as well.
Having examined the interim
report, a decision was taken to transfer the Principal to the Kurunegala
Education Office with effect from February 21.
The Secretary assured
that the investigations were being conducted in a free, independent and
transparent manner while also declaring that it will be completed speedily and
submitted to the North Western Chief Minister.
