Primary School principal arrested on bribery charges

The principal of the Matara Uyanwatta Primary Model School has been arrested today for allegedly soliciting a bribe to admit a child into the school, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption said.

The suspects had sought a bribe of Rs 53 250, to allegedly purchase 75 floor tiles, from a parent seeking to admit his daughter into the school, the Director general of the Bribery Commission, Lakshmi Jayawardena told Ada Derana.

She stated that he had attempted to obtain the cash through the teacher in charge of the class.

The school’s principal is to be produced at the Matara Magistrate’s Court today.
