VIDEO: 2014 PC Election: Polls close with 55-60% turnout

The lowest voter turnout for the Western and Southern Provincial Council election has been recorded in the Colombo District, with less than half the total registered voters in the district turning up to cast their ballots when polls closed, according to election monitors.
People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) stated that the voter turnout in the Colombo was only 49 per cent while the highest percentage was recorded in the Hambantota District (61%).
Meanwhile a voter percentage of 58% has been recorded in the Matara District, 55% in Galle District, 57% in Gampaha District and 58% in Kalutara District.
The overall voter turnout at the close of polls in both provinces is between 55 and 60 per cent, PAFFREL said.
Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya says that PC polls held today was peaceful with no major incidents.
He stated that the first result is expected to be released at around 11.00pm today while postal votes results are expected at around 8.00pm.
