SL maid steals from future employer’s house

A Sri Lankan maid claimed that she stole gold jewellery of her employer as the latter had failed to pay for her work, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

“Two days after placing the advertisement, I received a call from AJ who told me that she needed a month before joining work in my house. However, since she had come to see me, I asked her to do some work in the house so I could see how good she was. She excused herself, saying she won’t be able to do that at this time. She came four days later and, as I had to go out, I closed my bedroom and left her in the kitchen. When I returned I opened the bedroom for her to clean it and was watching her from time to time,” ZB said.

As the housewife liked the maid’s work, the two agreed that the maid would bring her papers to her in order to proceed with the formalities.

When the housemaid failed to appear and refrained from answering the housewife’s phone calls, the latter became suspicious and checked her jewellery.

“It was shocking for me to find out that most of my gold had been stolen,” ZB said.

The value of the missing gold and diamond sets was about Dh50,000.

The housewife reported the incident to the police who investigated the complaint and arrested AJ, 25, Sri Lankan and confiscated the jewellery that was in her possession.

“She claimed that she owned the gold jewellery. She said she had bought some of the jewellery from her country while she had purchased the rest in the UAE,” said the police.

The accused later admitted to stealing the gold from the housewife’s bedroom, claiming that it was in revenge for not being paid for her work.

“I had worked for her for two days and we had agreed that she would pay me on daily basis. As she did not pay me for my work on the first day, I took advantage that she was not at home on the next visit and stole the gold. I put the jewellery in a packet which I hid at the bottom of my handbag. Although my employer had searched my bag before I left her  house, she did not notice the gold,” confessed the maid.

The accused admitted the theft and the court will give its sentence on September 14., reports emirates247.
