The drive of Provincial Council election candidate Sendil Thondaman has surrendered to the Bandarawela Police station, this morning.

“The accident has taken place due to the negligent driving of the driver. He will be produced before the Magistrate, today,” police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The driver had fled the area, last evening, after the hummer he was driving had run over a group of people at Bandarawela town injuring 18 individuals including Thondaman.

One person who sustained life threatening injuries following the accident died upon admission to the Bandarawela District hospital. Some 15 persons are receiving treatments at the Diyatalawa hospital.

Thondaman who sustained minor injuries has been transferred to the Colombo National hospital, this morning.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Workers’ Congress alleged that this incident did not happen unexpectedly. “This was a conspiracy by some party to harm the life of Sendil Thondaman,” its vice president S. Sathyawel told Ada Derana.
