Five persons including a United National Party (UNP) Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council member were wounded and hospitalized following a clash at an election meeting in Eheliyagoda area in Ratnapura, election monitor Campaign for Free & Fair Election (CaFFE) says.

The incident transpired when a mob accompanied by UNP PC member Siripala Kiriella stormed in to a hotel at Eheliyagoda town, where the United People’s Freedom Alliance’s (UPFA) meeting was being held under the participation of Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

The wounded persons in their statements have stated that they were brutally assaulted with clubs, and sharp objectives by the UNP supporters.

Siripala Kiriella who also sustained injuries following the brawl was admitted to the hospital, the police said.

However, according to the CaFFE, a complaint had been lodged with the Election Department saying the UPFA meeting was against the election rules.
