Police and concerned villagers have launched a search operation after receiving information alleging that two 15-year-old students – a boy and a girl – had jumped into the Deduru Oya Reservoir this afternoon in what is suspected to be a suicide attempt.

Wariyapola Police have launched an investigation, based on the information received via the police emergency hotline – 119.

The school bags of the two teenagers, who are believed to be lovers, have been found near the bank of the reservoir while the boy’s school shirt was also discovered nearby.

According to the books found inside the bags, the teenagers have been identified as Grade 11 students from different schools in Kuliyapitiya while police have taken steps to notify their parents through the schools’ principals.

However, police are uncertain as to whether the students actually jumped into the reservoir, fell or are somewhere else as there are no eyewitnesses.

The Police media unit said that assistance has been sought from the navy to search the reservoir using divers.
