Popular author and tutor Upul Shantha Sannasgala says that the arrest of Shashi Weerawansa was not due to an issue with her, but an issue regarding her spouse ex-Minister “Wimal Weerawansa’s backbone.”

He was referring to the recent arrest of Shashi Weerawansa on charges of submitting forged documents to obtain a diplomatic passport.

Mr Sannasgala stated that as a Leftist leader Wimal Weerawansa should have the backbone to say publicly that he wedded a woman 10 years senior to him, it is his right and that nobody can question his decision.

Delivering a public lecture at the Sri Lanka Foundation in Colombo on Tuesday, the popular novelist stated that British-American actress Elizabeth Taylor at the age of 70 tied the knot with a 25 year old and noted that, however, she did not change her birth certificate to read she was an 18 year old girl.

He stated that while the accusations against Mrs Weerawansa of preparing forged documents is in fact a crime, it is however partially a mistake in the social system.

Mr Sannasgala said that according to paragraph 3(1) in the circular pertaining to the admission of students to Royal College in Colombo, only students living within the 100m radius of the school can be enrolled and that only Ranil Wickramasinghe’s residence is in that vicinity.

He stated numerous people falsify documents to enroll children to that school and that if arrests are to be made based on that charge, 99 per cent of the parents of Royal College students have to be arrested.

Mr Sannasgala revealed that he too prepared false documentation using an address on Bullers Road in order to enroll his two sons into Royal College, however, admitted that the attempt was futile as his sons did not receive admission.
