Man sentenced to death for possession of heroin

A man found guilty for the possession of 8 grams and 9 milligrams of heroin was sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court today.

The convict, a resident of Kolonnawa, was arrested in 2008 while following an extensive trial High Court Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena sentenced him to death after he was found guilty.

Delivering the verdict, the Judge stated that a crime wave has developed due to illegal drugs not only in the Kolonnawa area but also in various parts of the island.

Pointing out that the defendant in question is not the only drug dealer in the country, Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena emphasized the importance of instigating legal action against the remainder of such drug dealers who are evading the law.
