The government is planning to establish an office of National Unity headed by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to promote national unity in the country.

Reconciliation is the best way forward for national unity, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe said, speaking to Heads of media organizations at Temple Trees this morning.

We are establishing an Office for National Unity headed by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the Prime Minister said, adding, that the office would most likely be set up after the next Cabinet meeting.

He also said that the government is looking at setting up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, similar to the court-like restorative justice body assembled in South Africa after the abolition of apartheid.
