An electrically powered elevator will be installed in Sigiriya without harming its attractiveness and cultural values, the Government Information Department (GID) said.

This was disclosed by Director General of Archaeology Department Dr. Senarath Dissanayake addressing a media conference.

The GID quoted Dissanayake as saying “the Government has taken many steps to protect Sri Lanka’s world famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Main purpose of this step is to facilitate disabled and old people to visit Sigiriya, and pointed out that this type of modernisation already exists in developed countries,”

Dissanayake has also pointed out that the Government is making arrangements to modernise Sigiriya in a bid to attract more tourists to the historic rock fortress.

Sigiriya is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning and is the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka.
