Vajira Wijegunawardene has been appointed as the Director General of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Sri Lanka with immediate effect.

He is the brother of Kapila Wijegunawardene, who was recently named the chairman of Sri Lanka cricket’s new four-member selection committee.

Ada Derana earlier reported that the names of Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) Deputy Director General Dhammika Perera and Director of the SEC’s Capital Market Development Vajira Gunawardene were proposed to fill the vacancy of the Director General’s post.

The post of Director General – SEC has remained vacant for some time and the vacancy was advertised recently.

Professor Harendra Disa Bandara functioned as the Acting Director General of the Securities & Exchange Commission for some time and after his resignation in 2013, Deputy Director General Dhammika Perera has been overseeing the Commissions functions.

Recently, the SEC Board of Directors decided to fill the Director General vacancy while following the due procedures.
