The term of the local government bodies that were extended until May 15 will not be further extended and would dissolve automatically, Cabinet Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said.

The official term of the LG bodies were scheduled to end in March, however it had been extended until May 15 by the government due to the prevailing political situation in the country following the Presidential Election in January.

Minister of Public Order & Christian Affairs, John Amaratunga, had said yesterday that a decision has been taken to dissolve local government institutions next Friday (May 15) and that a special committee will be appointed to look into the corruption and malpractice which had taken place within them.
