A 36-year-old woman has attempted self immolation at a displacement camp she had been staying in following the devastating landslide in Meeriyabedda.

Police said that the woman had yesterday (14) attempted to commit suicide by immolating herself, claiming she had not received a land deed.

Disaster Management Minister A.H.M. Fowzie and Deputy Minister Lakshman Seneviratne yesterday visited the Makanda displacement camp, which is providing shelter to people displaced by the landslide on 29 October, 2014.

They had inquired into whether any irregularities had taken place in the distribution of land deeds.

The woman in question had reportedly attempted to immolate herself after the Minister and Deputy Minister had left the camp.
