Cyclist killed in wild elephant attack

A 54-year-old man was killed following a wild elephant attack in the Thanthirimale area.

Police said he was riding a bicycle when he had come face to face with the elephant, also believed to be responsible for damaging a house in the area.  

The victim was in critical condition upon being admitted to the Thanthirimale Hospital, however he succumbed to injuries shortly after, police said.  

Resident in the area say that the wild elephant had recently escaped from the Wilpattu National Park and that it poses a grave threat to their lives as well as their crops.
