Man fined for killing monkey on Poson Poya Day

A person who pleaded guilty to killing a wild monkey within the Sigiriya Sanctuary and attempting to sell its meat was fined Rs 20,000 by the Acting Magistrate of Dambulla today.

V.P. Milton Weerasuriya of Nagalawewa was arrested by Sigiriya Police, upon receiving information that the suspect was killing monkeys and selling their meat on Poson Poya Day (June 02).

A parcel containing nearly 1 kilogram of meat, allegedly from a monkey hunted down within the sanctuary.

The suspect, who pleaded guilty to the crime, was sternly warned by Acting Magistrate Jayampathi Ratnadiwakara, who also imposed the fine.
