CID arrests D.V. Upul

June 8, 2015   06:04 pm

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday arrested Southern Provincial Councillor D.V. Upul over several controversial comments made by the politician regarding the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID).

The CID summoned the Provincial Councillor to record a statement in this regard, this morning. Upul has been remanded until June 10 by the Colombo Magistrate as well.

The Chief Magistrate has also issued a directive prohibiting the Southern Provincial Councillor from travelling overseas, following a request by the CID.

The court instructed authorities to impound the passport of the Southern Province Fisheries Minister, on 4 June.

Upul, who backs the former president’s political comeback, is accused of allegedly asking people to “stone to death” officials of the special police unit.
