Couple held with gems and jewelry

A Sri Lankan couple has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle gold jewelry and gemstones worth over Rs 1 million out of the country.

The Businessman and his wife, from Ratnapura, had arrived at the airport to board a flight to Beijing in order to participate in a trade fair in China.

The jewelry and gemstones were found cleverly concealed inside a wallet within one of their luggage.

The jewelry and gems worth over 1,020,000 have been confiscated by Sri Lanka Customs officers.
