Ramadan to begin on Friday as new moon not sighted

June 17, 2015   08:25 pm

Since the new moon was not sighted in any part of the country today, the Colombo Grand Mosque has decided that Ramazan fast will commence from Friday (June 19).

The holy month of Ramadan was expected to begin on Thursday (18) for Muslims in Sri Lanka.

Muslims all over the world will observe a month of fasting and prayers during Ramadan to commemorate the time when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed on the night of “Laylat Al Qadr”.

Fasting during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is considered to be one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
