Election deposits made by 85 independent groups, 2 parties

A total of 85 independent groups and 2 political parties have made their deposits for the General Election as of last evening. Twenty-four independent groups had made deposits within yesterday alone, the Elections Secretariat said.

Colombo and Batticaloa districts each have 9 groups so far, the Government Information Department reported. 

Meanwhile the Elections Secretariat says that three more days remain for political parties and independent groups to hand over their nominations as they will only be accepted today, tomorrow and next Monday (July 13).

The Jana Setha Peramuna has yesterday handed over nominations for 4 districts, namely Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Matale districts. 

The Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) has handed over nominations for the Kandy District, the secretariat said. 

Meanwhile the Elections Commissioner is scheduled to hold discussion with election monitoring groups today (9).
