July 15, 2015   12:01 pm

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived at the SLFP Headquarters a short while ago for a special meeting of the UPFA Election Operation Committee meeting. All leaders of the major constituent parties of the UPFA along with President Maithripala Sirisena is scheduled to be present at the meeting.

A special SLFP Central Committee meeting is also scheduled to be held today evening as announced by the party General Secretary earlier today.

I was of the view that nominations should not be given to the former President Rajapaksa to contest under the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) ticket at the forthcoming General Election, President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday.

He added that he totally disagreed with the party’s decision to grant nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and that he will be defeated at the election, just like he was defeated at the last presidential election.

UPDATE: Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been appointed as the Chairman of the United People’s Freedom Alliance’s (UPFA) Election Operations Committee, former Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told Ada Derana.
