UPDATE: One dead, 4 injured after van runs over Duminda’s supporters

One person died while another 4 were wounded, 2 critically, when a van driven by a police officer ran over a group of political party supporters in Rambewa, Anuradhapura.

The Police Spokesman’s Office said that the vehicle in question was driven by a Chief Inspector (CI) attached to the Anuradhapura Police and that he has been arrested by Mihinthalaya Police.

The van had reportedly run over a group of supporters of UPFA candidate and Minister Duminda Dissanayake who were engaged in election campaigning in the area.

It was reported that the van was traveling from Medawachchiya towards Anuradhapura and that the vehicle had fled the scene after the incident.

Five persons including a woman were rushed to the Anuradhapura Hospital following the hit-and-run incident, however one of them, a 22-year-old youth, had succumbed to injuries.

Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition, according to hospital sources.
