Former Eastern Provincial Council member Kalanthar Lebbe Mohamed Fareed and the former Chairman of the Kattankudy Urban Council Sahul Hameed Mohamed Asfer have been arrested by police.

The two politicians were arrested on charges of attempted assault on the Batticaloa Assistant Elections Commissioner and obstructing his duties, police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Following a complaint received regarding alleged violation of election laws taking place in the Kattankudy area on Tuesday (4), the Assistant Elections Commissioner in question had visited the location.

The two suspects had then allegedly attempted to assault the elections official while a complaint regarding the incident was lodged with Kattankudy Police.

Acting on this complaint, Kattankudy Police arrested Mohamed Fareed and Mohamed Asfer this morning and they are expected to be produced before the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court.
