Sarath Kumara’s bail plea turned down for 7th time

The Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court today rejected for the seventh time the bail plea put forward by the House Leader of the North Central Provincial Council, Ananda Sarath Kumara.

The controversial politician was arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) on June 12 on charges of misappropriating a sum of Rs 900,000 from provincial council decentralized funds allocated for the distribution of roofing sheets among the poor.

When the case was taken up today (12), attorneys representing the defendant once again requested the court that Sarath Kumara be released on bail.

However, rejecting the bail request, Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Shanaka Kalansuriya ordered that Ananda Sarath Kumara be further remanded until August 18.

While stating that the bail plea will be considered on the aforementioned date, the magistrate also instructed the FCID to present a report on the progress of the investigations into the allegation.
