Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested a suspect attempting to smuggle almost 1kg of gold worth over Rs 4.6 million by concealing them in his rectal cavity.

The 59-year-old man from Colombo was arrested by customs after he arrived from Bangkok in the flight UL 403 at 11.10am.

Gold pieces weighing 925.7g and valued at Rs 4,625,350 were found concealed in his rectum, customs spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

After the customs inquiry, the gold pieces were forfeited and a penalty of Rs 300,000 was imposed, he said.
