The Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) has commenced investigations regarding five former diplomats, including four ex-security forces commanders, for allegedly engaging in political activities while attached to Sri Lankan missions abroad.

Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that the FCID has recorded statements from the officials in question regarding the allegations.

Former Army Commander General (Retrd) Shantha Kottegoda, who served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Bangkok, and former Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal (Retrd) Jayalath Weerakkody, who served as Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Pakistan, had given their statements on Monday (12).

Statements were recorded yesterday (13) from former Sri Lankan Navy Commanders Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, who was the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Japan, and Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, who served as Sri Lanka’s high commissioner to Australia.

Meanwhile Major General (Retrd) Jagath Kumara Wijesiri, who was the former Minister-Counsellor of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan, had given a statement to the FCID today (14), the police spokesman said.
