Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has instructed the Law and Order Minister Thilak Marapana to submit a report following an inquiry into yesterday’s HNDA students protest.

Bambalapitiya Police have arrested 39 students including two monks who had engaged in the protest, against making the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy non-equivalent to a degree programme and curtailing the four year programme by one year.

The protesters, who were blocking the road at Ward Place near the University Grants Commission (UGC), were met with tear gas and water cannons as they refused to disperse.

Police yesterday claimed that one police officer was injured as a result of the tense situation.
