Rs 125m bribe: Customs officers released on bail

December 1, 2015   10:48 am

The three customs officers including a superintendent who were arrested and remanded for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs 125 million have been released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.

When the case was taken up today, the bribery commission informed court that investigations regarding the arrested individuals have been completed and that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

However, the bribery commission stated that it has no objection towards the suspects being granted bail.

Therefore the Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya ordered that they each be released on a cash bail of Rs 100,000 and a personal bail of Rs 5 million.

He also ordered that one of the 3 bail guarantors should be a public servant and that the suspects appear at the bribery commission on the last Sunday of each month.

They have also been barred from leaving the country.

The case is to be taken up again on February 16.
