A 15-year-old has been arrested after he allegedly ran over and killed a mother and her 10-year-old daughter on a pedestrian crossing at Dematagoda, police said.

The fatal accident had occurred at around 8.50pm last night at a pedestrian crossing on Baseline Road near the Dematagoda railway ground.

Police said the 47-year-old woman and her daughter were rushed to the Colombo National Hospital in critical condition, however they succumbed to injuries after being admitted.

Preliminary inquiries have revealed that the car involved in the accident was at the time driven by the teenage suspect, who is also a resident of Demataoda.
