Disciplinary action is to be taken against the police officers who wrongfully arrested a teenage student and another individual in connection with the rape and murder of the 5-year-old girl in Kotadeniyawa.

The teenager and the other individual were arrested by officers attached to the Kotadeniyawa Police Station as suspects in the murder, however they were later released by the court.

Several days later they submitted a complaint to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) against several officers of the Kotadeniyawa Police.

The IGP ordered an inquiry to be carried out regarding the complaint under the supervision of the Senior DIG in charge of Western Province, the police spokesman’s office said.

Based on the finding of the inquiry, charge sheets have been issued against the Kotadeniya OIC, an Inspector, two Sub-Inspectors, a Sargent and a Constable.

They have been charged with the illegal detention of the two arrested suspects for 2 days at the Kotadeniyawa Police Station and the misplacing of property belonging to the suspects.
