Former Embilipitiya ASP further remanded

Former ASP of Embilipitiya Police Station, Chamil Dharmaratne, who was arrested and remanded in connection with the death of Sumith Prasanna Jayawardena during an altercation with police, has been further remanded until April 08.
The suspect, who is in remand custody at Kuruwita Prison, was produced before Embilipitiya Additional Magistrate Prasanna Fernando today (30).
The second report of the autopsy performed on Sumith Prasanna’s remains had not been submitted to the court today while the Additional Magistrate ordered that it be submitted.
While attorneys representing the defendant had requested that he be released on bail citing a spine injury suffered by their client, the court ordered that a medical report be submitted on the matter.
The former Embilipitiya ASP was arrested on suspicion over the death of Sumith Prasanna Jayawardena, a father of one, who died following a clash involving police officers and villagers during a celebration at a residence in Embilipitiya.
Meanwhile consideration of the bail application submitted on behalf of the defendant has been postponed.
