Court orders to exhume Lasantha’s remains

September 8, 2016   10:39 am

The Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court has ordered the exhumation of the remains of slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge on September 27.

The magistrate today approved a request made by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to exhume the remains of the founding Editor of The Sunday Leader newspaper, who was shot dead while he drove to work in January 2009.

The CID informed the court that certain contradictions existed between the autopsy report on the murder victim, the report on the surgery performed at the hospital and the government analyst report on the crime scene.

Therefore as further investigations were required on the remains with emphasis on these contradictions, the CID requested approval from the court to exhume the remains.

Approving the request, Mt. Lavinia Chief Magistrate Mohamed Sahabdeen ordered the remains to be exhumed at 8.00am on September 27 from its burial site at the Borella Cemetery in the presence of the Aluthkade No 2 Magistrate.
