Five people have been killed after a plane crashed soon after take-off on the island of Malta. Witnesses said they saw the plane rise before banking to the right and going ‘straight into the ground’.

All flights to and from Malta International Airport in Luqa have been cancelled. The people on board are believed to be EU border officials.
The plane that crashed was a twin-propeller Metroliner on its way to Luxembourgh, according to the Times of Malta.

Rescuers were looking for survivors. The plane, a twin-prop Metroliner, can carry around 10 people. The Times of Malta said the plane had been leased from Luxembourg for use by Frontex officials. There was no immediate news on the nationality of the victims.
