Students death: Pro-Tamil group lays siege to SL embassy in Chennai

Close to 30 volunteers of ‘May 17 Movement’ tried to lay siege to Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner’s office in Chennai to protest the death of two Jaffna students, India Today reported.

Nadarasa Gajan and Sulakshan, who were attached to the Jaffna University, sustained fatal injuries after they were shot at by the Jaffna police for disobeying orders to stop their motorbike at a roadblock at the Kulappidi Junction in Kankesanthurai on October 21, 2016. But the Jaffna police maintained that it was an accident. However, the autopsy conducted on the duo nailed police lies and revealed that the students died due to bullet injury in their head.

Srilankan authorities claimed that 5 policemen were arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident and an inquiry was ordered. The death of the students led to widespread commotion in Jaffna.

The students’ tragic death had cast a gloom in Tamil Nadu and pro-Tamil groups in the state condemned the act of the Sri Lankan cops.

Arulmurugan, member of ‘May 17 Movement’ said, “Sinhalese chauvinists killed two students without any reason. Students are being targeted as they participated earlier in the uprising.”

Arulmurugan, held Indian government accountable for the death of the students and alleged that Center collaborates with Sri Lankan government in many ways and turned a blind eye towards the human rights violations in the island nation.
