Former Deputy Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman has been arrested by the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) on Tuesday morning.

Karuna Amman was arrested as he arrived at the FCID to give a statement on the allegation of misusing a state vehicle, an official said.

The former Deputy Minister was questioned at the FCID for several hours before the arrest was made.

Amman was a former rebel leader who virtually ruled the Eastern province when he was part of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He broke away from the LTTE in March 2004 and later entered mainstream politics.

UPDATE:  Karuna Amman was remanded until 7 December after being produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
