Geetha to appeal court’s verdict on MP seat

May 3, 2017   12:29 pm

UPFA Galle District MP Geetha Kumarasinghe says that she will appeal the court’s verdict disqualifying her from holding a seat in the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

The Court of Appeal today disqualified Kumarasinghe from holding an MP seat due to her dual citizenship status. The veteran actress holds citizenship in Sri Lanka and Switzerland.

Speaking to Ada Derana, Kumarasinghe said that she would file an appeal with the Supreme Court within the day, challenging the verdict of the Appeals Court.

She urged her supporters and those who voted for her not to be distressed by this turn of events as she cannot be removed from her seat in Parliament until the verdict of the appeal is delivered.

However, she charged that this is a major strike to the people’s sovereignty and that she was elected from clean votes to represent the entire province as a female MP.

Therefore the biggest injustice has been done to the voters, Kumarasinghe stressed.
