Meethotamulla landslide – compensation process ongoing

Compensation is being granted to families affected by the Meethotamulla tragedy, Secretary of the Colombo District, Sunil Kannangara says.

Compensation has reportedly already been provided for 99 houses completely destroyed by the tragedy.

Kannangara stated that 50 new houses were provided to those who requested new houses, and Rs. 250,000 for furniture and Rs. 150,000 for rent were provided to each of the families that did not request new houses.

11 families that lived in rented houses in the affected area were given Rs. 250,000 for furniture, and another Rs. 50,000 in order to leave said houses.

Meanwhile, 48 families residing in the Danger Zone have been given new houses and an additional Rs. 10,000 each for transport purposes.

He stated that Rs. 150,000 each was given to the families of the Danger Zone that did not request new houses.

Accordingly, reports confirm that out of the 262 families affected by the tragedy, 257 families have been provided compensation for their losses.

 Sunil Kannangara further stated that action had been taken to offer a compensatory sum for the rightful land holders of the Meethotamulla area as well.
