54-year-old caught smuggling foreign currency in rectum

A 54-year-old Sri Lankan with a stash of foreign currency in his rectum has been intercepted by Airport Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The Sri Lankan passenger who attempted the smuggling was found to be from Negombo, and was bound to Singapore via Mumbai aboard the aircraft bearing the number 9W251, when he was intercepted by Customs officers at the departure terminal, Media Spokesperson of Sri Lanka Customs, Sunil Jayarathne said.
Two bundles of currency notes were found concealed in his rectum.
CHR 48,000, EUR 29,500 and NOK 20,000 had been found among the smuggled stash, the total of which adds up to LKR 13,569,775.
The detection was reportedly made by Assisrant Superintendents of Customs, Nuwan Abeynayake, Rasika Samanjith, Srilal Wijewardena and Nuwan Balage, at 8.00 pm yesterday (27).
An inquiry has been conducted under the direction of Director of Customs, Ruwan Sathkumara, Customs media stated.
Following the inquiry, the passenger had been released by Customs officials, after imposing a penalty of Rs. 300,000.
The foreign currency bundles have also been taken into the custody of Airport Customs.
