July 2, 2019   10:07 am

The Court of Appeal has appointed a five-member Judge Bench to consider the Writ application filed by journalist Malinda Seneviratne against the implementation of the death penalty.

Journalist Malinda Seneviratne filed a Writ application seeking an interim order preventing the implementation of the death sentence and cited Commissioner General of Prisons and the Superintendent of Welikada Prison as its respondents.

He points out implementing the death penalty could lead to a violation of human rights.

Hence, the petitioner seeks the Appeals Court to issue an interim order to the Commissioner General of Prisons and the Superintendent of Welikada Prison to prevent the implementation of the death sentence.
