PM says he intends to run for presidency

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has told the senior members of the party that he intends to be the presidential candidate of the United National Party in the upcoming election, according to sources.

The Premier has stated this when he met with the senior members of the UNP for a special discussion at Temple Trees this morning (06).

In addition to the UNP leader and senior Ministers and MPs representing the UNP, representatives of other parties aligned with the UNP had also joined in the discussion.

Speaking further, the Prime Minister has reiterated his right to contest in the presidential election as the leader of the UNP.

The majority of the UNP Working Committee has also given the nod to the Prime Minister to enter the election race, Wickremesinghe told the brass of the party today.

Sources further stated the Prime Minister’s public meetings aiming the presidential election would be launched at Hambantota.

However, Minister Harin Fernando said the Prime Minister and Minister Sajith Premadasa will hold a decisive discussion the UNP’s presidential candidacy this Sunday (08).
