Colombo HC rejects Ajith Prasanna’s bail application

February 7, 2020   05:19 pm

Colombo High Court today (07) rejected the bail application filed by Major (Retired) Ajith Prasanna, who was remanded over contempt of court charges.

On the 24th of January this year, Ajith Prasanna was remanded as per Article 18 of the Judicature Act for severely criticizing Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga during a press conference held on January 12.

When the bail application was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Dhammika Ganepola today, speaking on behalf of the Attorney General, Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara presented a charge sheet containing two allegations against Ajith Prasanna.

The defendant’s attorney President’s Counsel (PC) Jayantha Weerasinghe has then submitted the bail application for his client.

PC Weerasinghe has argued that his client would not abscond the court if he is released on bail, however, the Senior State Counsel had vehemently objected to granting bail to Ajith Prasanna, citing that the defendant constantly levelled various accusations against judges, investigation officers and other parties by holding press conferences.

He added that the defendant is already remanded by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court for intimidating witnesses in a case and that he has intentionally concealed this fact when filing the bail application today.

He also pointed out that the defendant has not shown any remorse for his conduct.

Considering the submissions, the Colombo High Court judge decided to reject Ajith Prasanna’s bail application.
