Regulation on minimum A/L qualification to become registered doctor under SLMC

Two Regulations under the Medical Ordinance were passed in Parliament on Tuesday (03), according to the Parliament’s Department of Communications.

One of the Resolutions included that in order to become a registered doctor under the Medical Council of Sri Lanka, the basic qualification should be 02 credit passes and 01 ordinary pass obtained from the Advanced Level Biology stream.

The leader of JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake objected to this suggested that the Resolution should be added to the ordinance allowing it to be subjected to amendments yearly. Therefore, he further suggested that the matter should be referred and discussed at the Consultative Committee and made open to amendments prior to the passing of the second Resolution.

However, the Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena pointed out in Parliament that the Government does not agree with the Leader of the JVP and that the Resolution should be passed in Parliament as agreed at Committee on Parliamentary Business.

Recording the objection raised by the JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the two resolutions were passed in Parliament.

Addressing the Parliament, the Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi in her reply speech stated that passing these two resolutions was a contemporary requirement. She further pointed out that medical education is of the required standards.
