Eight Government party members and four Opposition members of the Western Provincial Council (WPC) will be liable to lose their seats for being absent without notice for more than three months, according to the Council’s Chief Government Whip.

WPC’s Chief Government Whip Sunil Jayamini said that as at April 6, these 12 Provincial Councillors will complete the three months that they have been away without notifying the Council.

According to the Provincial Councils Act, any member who is absent from Council sessions without notifying for a continuous period of three months will be considered as having been disqualified as a councilor.

Mr. Jayamini said that the committee tasked with this issue met today (April 01) and had conveyed the position of the said members to WPC Chairman Sunil Wijeratne who will have to announce the stand when the Council meets on April 19.
