SC suspends Cabinet decision granting Paget Road residence to Maithripala
March 29, 2022 02:28 pm
The Supreme Court today temporarily suspended the Cabinet decision to provide a house at Paget Road in Colombo 07 to former President Maithripala Sirisena.
The court has also stated that another interim order will be issued to the respondents preventing them from complying with the relevant Cabinet decision.
The Supreme Court stated that the order will take effect four weeks after today (29) while the interim order will remain in effect until the duration of the hearing of the petition.
The order was issued by a judge-bench comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Yasantha Kodagaoda and Mahinda Samayawardena.
The Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) and its Executive Director Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu had filed the fundamental rights application before the former President left office, and hence its Respondents are Ministers of the former Cabinet.
The CPA had filed the petition alleging that the manner in which the Cabinet had granted the house to the former President was unconstitutional.
Further hearing of the petitions was subsequently postponed until May 18 by the court.
