If Govt. had done what we told present situation will not arise: Somawansa

The United Nations and all the imperialist powers are today demanding that Sri Lanka upholds several issues like human rights, good governance etc. These are similar issues that the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has been urging the Government to do right along, says JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe.
The United nations General Secretary is pressing the government to implement certain agreements as discussed between him and President Mahinda Rajapaksa when Ban Ki Moon visited Sri Lanka. The present impasse is due to this factor. However, Sri Lanka’s Foerign Ministry is not doing what it should do in steering foreign policy.
The JVP has always been against imperialist meddling in the affairs of Sri Lanka. Today a situation has arisen where the same imperialist powers are meddling with the affairs of the island due to wrong decisions and statements by the Foreign Ministry. If the country is ruined, what is the purpose of a Foreign Ministry, asked Mr. Amarasinghe while addressing a public seminar this evening at the New Town Hall premises.
India is yet to make known whether it supports Sri Lanka on the issue of the special panel of experts to advise the Secretary General on human rights violations in the country. Russia and China have stated that they support Sri Lanka. But will India compromise its relations with foreign governments just to support Sri Lanka over this issue, asked Somawansa Amarasinghe.
Adding further, the JVP leader said that Sri Lanka’s Palitha Kohona is heading the UN panel set up to investigate Israel’s action on Gaza. While the government has to support Kohona over a panel set up by the UN in one country, the same government is against a similar panel set up by the same UN on Sri Lanka, charged Somawansa Amarasinghe.
