Alcohol production resumes at two main distilleries after payment of taxes

The production of alcohol at two of the country’s main distilleries, which was temporarily halted earlier today (28 Nov.) due to the non-payment of taxes, has resumed, Excise Department sources told Ada Derana.

Accordingly, alcohol production at W. M. Mendis & Co Ltd and “enigala Distilleries Lanka (Pvt) Ltd resumed a short while ago, after their due taxes were paid.

According to Excise Department sources, a collective tax payment of Rs. 116 million was made from both distilleries.

Earlier today, the Excise Department reported that the production of alcohol was temporarily suspended at W. M. Mendis & Co Ltd and “enigala Distilleries Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, due to their failure to pay taxes.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the licenses of the aforementioned distilleries were also suspended, along with those of three other distilleries, due to their failure to pay taxes on time.

On 02 November, the distillery licenses of Synergy Distilleries (Pvt) Ltd, Finnland Distilleries Corporation (Pvt) Ltd, Wayamba Distilleries, W M Mendis & Co Ltd and the “enigala Distilleries Lanka (Pvt) Ltd were suspended.
