Three women have been arrested in connection with the sale of infant twins including the mother of the newborns, police reported.

Accordingly, a 23-year-old woman from Piliyandala was arrested for reportedly selling her one-week-old infant twins, while two other women from Ragama and Kelaniya were arrested for allegedly ‘purchasing’ the babies.

The arrests were made during an investigation that was launched following an anonymous tip-off received by the OIC of the Ragama Police pertaining to a woman in the area.

The mother of the infants had reportedly sold the babies to two women in Ragama and Kelaniya, for a sum of Rs.  25,000 each, police reported.

The three suspects were produced before the Welisara Magistrate’s Court today (07 Dec.), and have been remanded until Friday (08 Dec.).

According to police, the twins were born at the Castle Street Hospital for Women.
