An inmate of the Kalutara Prison has reportedly died while receiving treatment at the Kalutara General Hospital in Nagoda.

Prisons Commissioner and Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake stated that the inmate, albeit having initially received treatment for a fever on Thursday (28 Dec.), had fallen ill again, and was subsequently admitted to the Nagoda Hospital.

The deceased, who was imprisoned on drug-related charges, later succumbed to his illness.

A cause of death, however, although determined an illness, is yet to be specified, Dissanayake stated, adding that all new inmates slated to serve their sentences at Matara Prison will be redirected to Angunakolapelessa Prison.

Another inmate of the Kalutara Prison died of pneumonia last week, while 17 inmates of the Matara Prison were hospitalized due to meningitis, of whom one succumbed to his illness.

Meanwhile, in September, two inmates of the Galle Prison also died of meningitis.
