Govt. obstructing supporters coming to Colombo, claims JVP

The police is obstructing party supporters from coming to Colombo to attend the ‘Black Day’ protest organized by the opposition at Ayurveda Junction in Borella, says JVP propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath.

A bus transporting Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) supporters has been detained at Medawachchiya by the police claiming that they were suspected of carrying explosives, Said the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath.

The police had said they were waiting for sniffer dogs to be brought to examine the bus for explosives. This was clearly an attempt to delay the journey, charged Mr. Herath while claiming similar incidents have been reported from several areas.

Buses with supporters heading to Colombohave been similarly detained at Matara, Galle, Hambantota, Puttalam and Badulla districts by the police on various flimsy excuses, Vijitha Herath said.

The right of expression and the freedom to protest are being suppressed by the government and the JVP vehemently condemn this move, reiterated Mr. Herath.

Several JVP supporters who were pasting posters and distributing pamphlets have been arrested and are languishing in prison. They were trying to raise awareness among the masses regarding the constitutional amendments. The government is trying to suppress this move as well, Vijitha Herath said.

The JVP Propaganda Secretary urged all those who value democracy to flock towards the protest against the government attempt to suppress democracy and freedom to be held today at the Ayurveda Junction in Borella.
